British ‘Motec’ Shoulder to Shoulder with ‘FOCUS’ America

A number of medical professional groups visit Ghana on a regular basis from the U.K, Holland, Germany, Belgium and the United States with the aim of providing basic and highly skilled care to the patients in Ghana. The majority concentrate on Nursing, Psychiatry and General Surgery. Other groups provide Orthopaedic Trauma services in various parts of Ghana with additional objective of transferring skills and providing educational programmes that are intended to leave lasting improvements in the Health Care Services in Ghana.

Motec Life-U.K based in Hertfordshire and ‘FOCUS’ based in the United States are the two main Orthopaedic Trauma groups paying regular visits to Ghana. Motec provides Orthopaedic Trauma Services mainly at Koforidua St Joseph’s Orthopaedic Hospital and Lister Hospital in Accra whereas FOCUS provides care based at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in the capital, Accra.

In a recent visit to the United States, Motec President, Mr Ofori-Atta met the leading Hip and Knee Arthroplasty surgeon of FOCUS, Dr Krauss, in Ohio. Dr Krauss is an incredibly successful Orthopaedic Surgeon who has set time out of his busy hospital schedule to send a contingent of staff from his hospital to visit Ghana twice a year. Mr Ofori-Atta, the leader of Motec draws his team membership from across the U.K based on part sponsorship of teams from his family account and members raising funds from the British Public and sacrificing annual leave for the drive to up-grade care in selected hospitals (currently four in number). The two discussed Orthopaedic Trauma Care in Ghana and promised to continue discussions on the level of co-operation between the two groups. It is hoped that in future the two organisations would be able to pull their strength together to enable the working groups make a more effective mark on Orthopaedic Trauma Services in Ghana.

Picture below shows Mr Ofori-Atta, (right) having a deep and emotionally charged positive discussions with Dr Krauss at Glen Cove Orthopaedic Department of the North Shore University Hospital, New York on the 14th of May 2007.
